“It’s our nature. We destroy. It’s the constant of our kind. No matter the color of blood, man will always fall.”

This is what this book is all about. A society divided by the colour of blood. We have the Silvers—privileged, with special abilities and who control everything. And then there’s the Reds—oppressed, forced to find work quickly or be conscripted at the age of 18 and possibly never return home. But despite the colour of one’s blood, silver or red, or their social status, rich or poor, everyone is flawed. Every human has the capacity to destroy. And this is what I find so relatable in this book. It sums up the discrimination in our society pretty well.

“I’m a Red girl in a sea of Silvers and I can’t afford to feel sorry for anyone.”

In this cruel world divided by blood, we have Mare Barrow, an ordinary red girl who by some twisted fate discovers that despite the color of her blood, she possesses an ability that no Silver has ever seen or heard of before and is then forced to live alongside the Silver elite in order to survive.

Mare is “Red and Silver, and stronger than both.” The first of her kind. Or so she thought.

She is a strong and selfish character. Victoria Averyard said that’s why the first and last sentences of both Red Queen and Glass Sword start with “I”, because Mare is an incredibly selfish protagonist. And both sentences have really strong verbs (“hate” and “kill” respectively) that show the dark tone of this book.

Cal reminded me of both Dorian and Chaol from the Throne of Glass series in a way, which is a good thing because I love them! He was raised to continue his father’s work and even though he wanted things to change he was too afraid of the repercussions and failing his people, but I’m hoping that after everything that’s happened he’ll help Mare do the right thing. And I felt really bad for him in the end…

I don’t have much to say about Maven except that I have extremely conflicted feelings towards him.

Also, Evangeline really annoyed me but she seems like a promising character so I haven’t really formed an opinion about her.

“Anyone can betray anyone.”

Damn right they can. I did not see that plot twist coming! But I’m glad it happened, made the book even more interesting. And the ending leaves you craving for more!

I highly recommend this book. In fact I even bought it as a birthday gift for my friend 😀 (You can see in the picture above, my copy is the hardcover and hers is the paperback. They’re both gorgeous!)

And I can’t wait for Glass Sword! I’ve read an excerpt and it looks really promising!

  1. Wow! This review was awesome! I was on the fence about buying it, but now I will! Also when you mentioned Dorian and Chaol from Throne of Glass…ADJEHUSIHDKKJGFYU- my chest hurts now…the feels for the book are so many!!

      1. I love Chaol and I don’t think he betrayed her because there was nothing she could’ve done. And Celaena did the same or worse to Chaol and Nehemia. The king threatened to kill Chaol, Nehemia and her brothers if Celaena didn’t kill those people and she didn’t. If the king found out what she did they would all die. She kept that from them so technically what she did was worse. I think she was being kinda hypocrite because there was nothing she could have done, Nehemia wanted to kill herself. But she’s still my favourite female character 🙂 I love that she’s flawed and I love that about Chaol too 🙂

      2. I mean, hes not a bad guy, but he coulda done something to stop Nehemia. Although in hindsight she is kinda psycho…I mean i get why she did it, but she emotionally broke Celaena. Also Chaol is kinda a pussy. No offense, hes hot, but he was afraid to challenge the king (for good reason) but if he really loved her he would have. Plus LETS BE HONEST ROWAN IS WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY HOTTER!! ❤ ❤ ❤

      3. Well technically he couldn’t stop her because she planned her own death. And I never really understood why she had to do it… And he was afraid, understandably, but he did take action in the end. That’s why I love his character development. And I love Chaol but yeah Rowan is hotter 😉

      4. lol i just started Queen of Shadows. I hate him so much. Hate him! He’s being so mean to Aelin! BTW I WAS NOT READY FOR AELIN TO BE SO GOD DANG KICK A$$!! I started screaming and crying so hard my chest hurt. She is all like, “I’m amazing and angry, and out for blood! TREMBLE AT MY POWER! OH YEA AND I HAVE A BLOODY ARMY SO SCREW YOU BECAUSE ROWAN AND FIRE AND MAGIC!!” Then she proceeds to flick everyone off while Rowan is behind her looking threatening. OMG! IM SORRY BUT THIS BOOK! THIS SERIES! I CANT! *has trouble breathing* yea…but back to Chaol. I’m on Aelin’s side. lol

    1. Well the first books that I can think about are Throne of Glass (one of my favourite series!), The Kiss of Deception (I have a review for this one and the second book in the trilogy), The Darkest Minds and Shatter Me. They’re all great books with strong female characters 😉

      1. Do you think that Throne Of Glass would be okay for an 11 year old that has read divergent and the 100? X

      2. Well, I think so… At least looking back to what I was reading at 11 years old I think I would have enjoyed it. But as the series progresses (especially in the 4th book) things get more heated, sexually speaking. There isn’t any scene that is very specific (it’s still a young adult book) but I would call Queen of Shadows a sensual book in some scenes. It really is a matter of what you feel comfortable reading about. Sorry if I’m not much help haha

      3. Thanks so much for your help! I bought Throne Of Glass because I needed something to read and you recommended it. Thanks for the content heads up!

I’m about halfway through now and am really enjoying it! Celaena is an epic lead, like you said a strong female. I’m loving Princess Nehemia so much!

Thanks for recommending it, I am really enjoying the book and it has saved me from a book hangover after the 100!

      4. Oh I’m so glad I could help you and that you’re enjoying it! I seriously love every female character in the throne of glass books, they’re all such strong and badass characters! And I love the guys too, they’re all so hot and sweet!

      5. Currently there are 4 books out (Throne of Glass, Crown of Midnight, Heir of Fire and Queen of Shadows) and a novella called The Assassin’s Blade (it’s about Celaena’s life before she went to Endovier and what happened to Sam so I’d recommend reading this one before QoS). But there will be 2 more books released in the next two years 🙂

      6. I’m like 3/4 through Throne Of Glass and I am enjoying it soo much!!! I’m in Newcastle without any wifi (this is coming from a shopping centre) so it’s become the thing I do most! I like all the boys. Especially Nox, and obviously Dorian and Chaol.😘
All the girls are, as you said, really strong female characters, apart from Kaltain. She makes me sad, because she reminds me a bit of Celeste in The Selection and The Elite (NOT The One).

Anyway thanks so much for recommending it, you obviously have fabsolutely epic book taste!!! XxxX

        ***UPDATE***

Now I’ve finished it. It was SO good!

        Favourite character: Nox or Nehemia

Best Bit: When Dorian taught Celaena billiards OR their first kiss

I just don’t understand why she couldn’t stay with Dorian. She kept so many secrets, what’s one more?

        Thanks again for the recommendation!

      7. I’m so glad you loved it!! I take it you’ll be continuing the series? If so I’d love to know your thoughts on the next books 🙂 the story gets SO much better (even tho it’s already fantastic) and you’ll meet new amazing characters, both male and female, in book 3 and 4 😉

      1. You’re not being nosy 🙂 sadly I’m not really doing anything 😦 we don’t really celebrate Halloween where I live in Portugal, it’s mostly just kids who dress up. But I’d really like to dress up or something, I miss celebrating Halloween. What about you? And btw what’s your name? Xx

  2. Okay. I’m in post-plot twist depression. Chaol and Celaena need to get back together. Right now. Or else Sarah J. Maas may be bombarded with texts, emails, comments and letters regarding them. No kidding. ❤ CHAOL AND CELAENA ❤

      1. Honestly, if they don’t get back together I may murder someone. JUST KIDDING. Maybe not literally. I DID ship Dorian and Nehemia but y’know…
        That cannot happen…
        😥

      2. Yeah I kinda shipped Dorian with Nehemia for a moment there too but yeah… I keep switching ships tho xD but honestly I’m so excited for you to read Heir of Fire and Queen of Shadows because that’s when things really get intense!!

      3. Same. It was just one chapter where I felt so sorry for him and the dress she was wearing made me think that she liked him… Beginning of CoM. X
